VAT returns
The Belgian tax authorities have recently made a significant adjustment to their e-filing process. Starting from January 31, 2024, commercial digital certificates like "Isabel" and "GlobalSign" will no longer provide access to the Intervat tax portal for filing Belgian VAT returns.
This means that, after this date, you won't be able to use these certificates to electronically sign and submit Belgian VAT returns and sales listings.
There is an alternative option available: using a Belgian e-ID. Without the proper authorization, you may lose access to digital correspondence from the administration (e.g., current account statements).
If you don’t have a Belgian e-ID or require authorization for accessing your company's account or another legal entity, there are workarounds available.
Intrastat
Intrastat filings have traditionally been managed through a dedicated government portal called "One Gate." Historically, access to the One Gate Intrastat portal was facilitated through simple credentials, such as a username and password, making it convenient for entities to gain access. However, it's important to note that, beginning in 2024, these credentials will no longer serve as a means to access the Intrastat filing platform.
As opposed to the VAT, the Intrastat OneGate platform will (still) provide access through commercial certificates. However, for enabling the filing of returns on behalf of other entities, Intrastat authorities (now) demand the formal submission of a power of attorney.
